About this video
‘Scenes from an Urban Sunset’ is a study in lighting that combines 2D and 3D animation. Using the city itself and its lighting as our main characters, we worked with original 2D handcrafted digital backgrounds as we integrated 3D assets throughout the composition, bringing our animated landscape to life. Imagine it’s Friday, around 6:00 PM. It’s a beautiful and clear autumn afternoon, rush hour has already started. The noisy and chaotic city gets ready for a well deserved weekend. The sun is slowly falling and its reddish light describes every element of the metropolis. As dusk comes, a calmer and more peaceful environment starts to emerge… That’s the setting for ‘Scenes from an Urban Sunset’, our latest animation project. More than a short, is an animated study in light and colors, and how they both interact with the metropolis at a specific point of the day, letting the natural color palette of the dusk shine through. As a NYC-based studio, it only made sense for us to pay homage to that other Raxo member that accompanies us on a daily basis: the city. The main goal of the project, besides showcasing our skills in terms of animation, is to study how the light changes through the day, giving us different types of warmth and lighting to work with. Perspective is also an important element of the piece, as elements and objects change depending on the distance and POV of the spectator, and the animation needed to convey this as well. Join us on this animated field trip as the sun sets and the fun begins.
