About this video
How about recovering treasures in your free time and standing up to Nazis while doing it? Does that sound appealing to you? Then you are very welcome to help build up the Library of Lost Books. The Higher Institute for Jewish Studies (HIJS) in Berlin was one of the most important institutions for a modern, liberal current of Judaism in Germany. It was open to all interested parties, regardless of gender or denomination. The heart of its academic activities was undeniably its library with a collection of around 60,000 books. This, together with other libraries belonging to Jewish institutions and private individuals, was systematically looted by the Nazis from 1939 onwards, with the plan to create a so-called "Jewish library" to "research" the supposed enemy. Some of this Nazi-looted property was destroyed during the war, but many books were also recovered and are now scattered all over the world. The Library of Lost Books is a citizen science project initiated by the Leo Baeck Institute aiming to virtually replenish the HIJS library and make it accessible to all interested parties worldwide. And this video is a viral call to action!
